Bridge falls in Alcala, Cagayan

Piggatan Bridge in Alcala, Cagayan

The Piggatan Bridge in Alcala, Cagayan collapsed on Monday afternoon after overloaded trucks passed by it, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said.

“Preliminary findings reveal that three (3) loaded trucks, each with an estimated weight of 50 tons, were on the bridge at the time, far exceeding its 18-ton capacity, which seems to have caused the structure to collapse,” the DPWH said in a statement.

“The Department shall provide a recommendation based on the results of the assessment,” the department added.

The Cagayan Public Information Office earlier reported that the bridge collapsed along with some 10-wheeler trucks.

The infrastructure is currently impassable due to the incident, causing several motorists to be stranded, according to a report in “24 Oras.”

Following the incident, the DPWH advised the public to take the alternate routes via  Jct. Gattaran – Cumao – Capissayan – Sta. Margarita Bolos Point Road to Baybayog – Baggao – Sta. Margarita Road (and vice versa).

The infrastructure is currently impassable due to the incident, causing several motorists to be stranded, according to a report in “24 Oras.”
