Magnitude 7.4 earthquake hits offshore Manay, Davao Oriental

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake rocked Manay, Davao Oriental on Friday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.
PHIVOLCS said the earthquake with a depth of 23 kilometers occurred at 09:43 a.m. The location of the earthquake was around 43 kilometers east of Manay.
Initially, PHIVOLCS reported that the earthquake was magnitude 7.6 before downgrading it to 7.4 before 11 a.m.
Damage and aftershocks are expected, according to PHIVOLCS.
The reported intensities in the earthquake are the following:

1 Dead
Meanwhile, One person was reported dead after earthquake rocked, according to Davao Oriental Governor Nelson Dayanghirang said Friday.
Interviewed on Balitanghali, Dayanghirang said the victim was from Mati City.
“Meron na kaming confirmed dito sa City of Mati, isang casualty. Isa. Nabagsakan siya ng part ng bahay,” he said.
(We have one confirmed here in the City of Mati, one casualty. The person was hit with a part of a house that collapsed.)
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has said that the government is mobilizing efforts to ensure the safety of everyone affected.
“We are now assessing the situation on the ground and ensuring that everyone is safe,” Marcos said.
“We are working round the clock to ensure that help reaches everyone who needs it. Let us continue to look out for one another and pray for the safety of all our countrymen,” he added.
Tsunami Warning
According to PHIVOLCS, the people in the coastal areas of the following provinces are “strongly advised to immediately evacuate” to higher grounds or move farther inland:
- Eastern Samar
- Dinagat Islands
- Davao Oriental
- Southern Leyte
- Surigao Del Norte
- Leyte
- Surigao Del Sur
PHIVOLCS said “destructive tsunami is expected with life threatening wave heights.”
“Based on the local tsunami scenario database, it is expected to experience wave heights of more than one meter above the normal tides and may be higher on enclosed bays and straits,” PHIVOLCS said.
“It is forecasted that the first tsunami waves will arrive between 09:43:54 to 11:43:54, 10 Oct 2025 (PST). These waves may continue for hours,” it added.
Meanwhile, Indonesia has also issued a tsunami warning for northern Sulawesi after the quake hit Davao Oriental.
Indonesia's geophysics agency suggested that there was a risk of tsunami waves as high as 50 cm hitting Indonesia's shorelines.
PHIVOLCS lifted the tsunami warning at 1:43 p.m. A Reuters report at 2:40 p.m. Friday said Indonesia's geophysics agency has also lifted its tsunami warning.

Class, gov't work suspended
Local governments in Davao Region have ordered the immediate suspension of classes and government work following the powerful quake.
“In view of the recent earthquake and to give way to the conduct of rapid damage assessment of infrastructures and facilities, classes in all levels, public and private educational institutions, in Davao City are hereby suspended immediately,” the Davao City government said in an advisory.
In neighboring Davao Oriental, Governor Generoso town also suspended classes and government work pursuant to Executive Order No. 38 signed by Mayor Juanito C. Inojales.
“Classes at all levels and work in national and local government offices within the Municipality of Governor Generoso are suspended today, Friday, 10 October 2025, due to the 7.6-magnitude earthquake,” the order read.
Davao De Oro Governor Raul Mabanglo also announced the immediate suspension of work and classes except for frontline offices.
The Davao Oriental earthquake comes as the Philippines is still reeling from a magnitude 6.9 earthquake that devastated Bogo City, Cebu, on September 30, 2025.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDDRMC) said that 74 people died from that quake while 559 were injured.
The Cebu earthquake also affected 666,439 people or 189,620 families in Central Visayas. Of the affected population, 7,813 individuals were displaced. —VAL/ VDV, GMA Integrated News
