Tsunami warning after magnitude 6.8 Davao Oriental earthquake lifted

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has lifted its tsunami warning following the magnitude 6.8 earthquake that hit offshore of Manay, Davao Oriental at 7:12 p.m. Friday.

LIVE UPDATES: Davao Oriental earthquake

PHIVOLCS announced the cancellation at 11:12 p.m. after its sea level monitoring stations in Bislig City and Tandag City in Surigao del Sur did not detect "any significant tsunami waves."

The agency earlier recommended the immediate evacuation of residents of all coastal communities in the provinces of Surigao del Sur, Davao Oriental, and Surigao del Norte in light of the tsunami warning.

Friday morning's magnitude 7.4 earthquake off the coast of Manay town generated tsunami waves measuring 30 centimeters in height in Tandag City. However, according to PHIVOLCS Director Teresito Bacolcol, these waves were not considered destructive. —VBL, GMA Integrated News
