DepEd: 947 schools affected by magnitude 7.4 Davao Oriental earthquake
Operations of 947 schools were affected by the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that occurred off the coast of Manay, Davao Oriental, on Friday morning, the Department of Education (DepEd) reported on Saturday.
The earthquake affected a total of 89,691 students and 8,324 teachers across nine regions, adding that there were 137 students and 49 teachers/staff who sustained injuries.
The estimated cost of damage in 548 schools is P2,118,690,000.
“Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) coordinators and engineers continue to conduct rapid visual assessments of the damage. Ongoing collaboration with the Education Cluster and the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) aims to enhance disaster response efforts,” the DepEd said in an update.
Some 97% of the impacted schools had declared class suspensions, the DepEd said. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/VBL, GMA Integrated News
