Magnitude 6.0 earthquake hits off Cagwait, Surigao del Sur

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 occurred off the coast of Cagwait, Surigao del Sur late Saturday night.

First recorded at magnitude 6.2, the epicenter of the earthquake, which hit at 10:32 p.m., was located 28 kilometers northeast of Cagwait, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). It struck at a depth of 24 km.

• Intensity II - Alangalang, City of Baybay, Dulag, Javier, and Palo, Leyte; City of Catbalogan, Samar; Sogod, Southern Leyte; Libona, Bukidnon; City of Gingoog and Initao, Misamis Oriental; City of Surigao, Surigao Del Norte

Aftershocks and damage are expected after the tremor, which happened one day after a doublet earthquake—a term used to describe two closely-timed earthquakes that occur nearby—hit Manay, Davao Oriental.

At least eight people were reported to have been killed due to the Davao Oriental earthquakes, according to the Office of Civil Defense. —VBL, GMA Integrated News
