3 miners in Davao de Oro among fatalities due to earthquake

At least three miners were killed in Pantukan, Davao de Oro, after magnitude 7.4 and 6.8 earthquakes hit Manay, Davao Oriental on Friday, the Davao de Oro government said Sunday.

“Nasa mining site kasi sila tapos may gumuho na lupa, natamaan sila ng malalaking bato,” Anecito Aguilar Torrejos, Davao de Oro government spokesperson, told Super Radyo dzBB in an interview.

(The miners were at a mining site when the soil collapsed and they were hit by big rocks.)

He added that the victims’ bodies were recovered while the rest of the miners were rescued.

Mining ban

The Davao de Oro government has ordered a temporary suspension of all mining operations in the province following the recent successive earthquakes.

“Ongoing ‘yung accounting ng lahat ng mga miners na maaapektuhan nito ng PENRO (Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office),” Torrejos said.

(The accounting of all affected miners is currently ongoing under the PENRO.)

He added that assessment of concerned agencies like the Mining and Geosciences Bureau and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office are needed before the resumption of mining activities.

Torrejos said the Department of Social Welfare and Development is ready to assist the affected miners.

Patients

Meanwhile, patients of Department of Health (DOH) hospitals in the Davao Region were safely returned to the facilities after they were transferred to tents and evacuation centers following the consecutive earthquakes, according to Mao dela Cruz’s report on Super Radyo dzBB.

These patients came from the Davao Regional Medical Center, Davao Occidental General Hospital, and Southern Philippines Medical Center.

Some students were brought to the Davao Regional Medical Center, while a mother safely delivered a baby in an evacuation area after the earthquakes.

Despite being the nearest to the epicenter, all of the more than 600 patients of Davao Regional Medical Center remained safe.

Today, the DOH continues its rapid assessment in the region and continues to be ready to respond to health emergencies. —KG, GMA Integrated News
