Nearly 71,000 families in Davao Oriental affected by strong quake
The number of families affected in Davao Oriental following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck off Manay town on Friday, October 10, 2025, has reached 70,985, based on partial data released by the provincial government as of 4 a.m. on Saturday, October 11.
Around 16, 553 individuals were also affected by the tsunami warning issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) following the tremor. The warning was lifted a few hours later.
The data also showed that a total of 225 houses were destroyed and 472 were damaged.
Several schools, churches, barangay halls, and other structures also sustained damages.
Three people were confirmed dead while 502 others were reported injured, including those who fainted and suffered from hypertension.
The data was gathered from Mati City and the towns of Lupon, Baganga, Boston, Cateel, Caraga, Manay, Tarragona, Govenor Generoso, San Isidro, and Banaybanay.
The provincial government said the figures were based solely on submissions from information officers. Residents are advised to contact their respective municipal hotlines if there are other unreported impacts.
A magnitude 6.8 earthquake shook the province at 7:12 p.m. just hours after a magnitude 7.4 quake rocked the area and other parts of Mindanao morning of the same day.
With two strong earthquakes hitting off Manay on the same day, PHIVOLCS explained that these could be considered “doublet earthquakes.”
“They are distinct or different earthquakes in almost the same area with two (or more) main shocks that have a slight difference in magnitude,” the state seismologists said.
“This happens when faults or trenches are causing the stress to trigger a sequence of events,” it added.
PHIVOLCS earlier noted that the magnitude 7.4 earthquake in the morning was triggered by the movement in the Philippine Trench. —With reports from GMA News Online, GMA Regional TV
