Davao Oriental earthquakes affected over 1 million people — NDRRMC

The affected population of the magnitude-7.4 and 6.8 doublet earthquakes in Manay, Davao Oriental on October 10 has breached the one million mark, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Wednesday.

In its 8 a.m. report, the NDRRMC said the total figure now stood at 1,124,611 individuals or 256,036 families.

Most of the affected population was reported in Davao Region with 914,221 persons or 197,119 families, while Caraga had 210,390 individuals or 58,917 families.

A total of 2,903 persons or 748 families were staying in evacuation centers, while 192 individuals or 52 families were taking shelter in other places.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) on Tuesday said the reported death toll in the earthquake stood at nine, while the number of injured people was 403.

A total of 10,982 houses were damaged—10,267 partially and 715 totally. Also, 392 infrastructures worth P115,383,000 were damaged.

Classes in 163 areas and work schedules in 142 areas have been suspended due to the impact of the earthquake.

A state of calamity was declared in the entire province of Davao Oriental.

Assistance worth 57,783,286 has been provided to the earthquake victims so far, according to the NDRRMC.

As of 8 a.m., the number of aftershocks in the Davao Oriental earthquake has reached 1,383, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

At least 19 of these aftershocks were felt. The strength of the aftershocks ranged from magnitude 1.2 to 5.8. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
