11-foot oarfish washed ashore in Roxas, Oriental Mindoro

A dead 11-foot oarfish was washed ashore along the coast of Barangay San Jose in Roxas, Oriental Mindoro on Tuesday.

A fisherman found the sea creature swimming weakly toward the shore, and it eventually died, the Municipal Agriculture Office of Roxas said. This was also the first sighting of an oarfish in the barangay, it added.

According to Japanese folklore, the oarfish is considered a harbinger of earthquakes as it's thought to be a divine messenger from the sea god.

But Japanese scientists in 2019 already debunked the correlation between the appearance of oarfish and major earthquakes. Instead, a 2018 study suggested that the cooler depths during the El Niño season prompt the deep-sea creatures to swim to the shallows to look for plankton. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/LDF, GMA Integrated News
