Homes shake, aquariums spill amid Surigao del Norte earthquake


Several videos captured the impact of the magnitude-6.0 earthquake in General Luna, Surigao del Norte on Friday morning.

In Cantilan, Surigao del Sur, the earthquake's strength was witnessed inside a home as a refrigerator and water containers shook. A woman was also seen holding the arm of a child during the incident.

Meanwhile in San Francisco town in Agusan del Sur, water from rows of aquariums swayed and spilled due to the earthquake's force.

CCTV footage inside a sari-sari store in Cortes, Surigao del Sur showed merchandise swaying and customers rushing away when the earthquake hit.

In a bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the earthquake occurred 13 kms from General Luna town at 7:03 a.m.

The earthquake was initially reported as magnitude-6.2 before PHIVOLCS downgraded it to magnitude-6.0. The earthquake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 28 kms.

In its wake, the General Luna municipal government suspended classes at all levels until further notice, as well as government work, private offices, inter-island travel, port operations, and sea-related activities.

The local government has also set up evacuation sites at the Tawin-Tawin, Corazon, and Consuelo covered courts.

"Mandatory evacuation of residents in coastal and low-lying areas to higher ground, with assistance prioritized for vulnerable groups," the General Luna government said. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
