Quezon provincial gov't requires use of face masks amid flu-like cases
The provincial government of Quezon has ordered the mandatory wearing of face masks both in indoor settings and outdoor areas where physical distancing is not implemented, in a bid to avoid the spread of COVID-19 and influenza-like illnesses (ILI).
In an executive order, the local government said the mandatory wearing of face masks is in light of the rise in illnesses such as colds, cough, and pneumonia.
It also ordered individuals with symptoms such as colds, sore throat, or fever to immediately isolate, while testing remains optional.
The local government likewise called on the public to update their flu and pneumococcal vaccines and to continue observing proper hygiene and minimum public health standards.
In a separate Facebook post, the Public Information Office of Lucena City said face-to-face classes at all levels and in private and public schools are suspended once more from Oct. 20 to 22, 2025 as a precaution against the spread of flu and pneumonia.
"Ipinapaalala rin ang pagsusuot ng FACEMASK sa mga indoor at outdoor settings," the Facebook post added.
Data from the Department of Health (DOH) showed that around 133,000 cases of influenza-like illnesses (ILI) were recorded in September, lower than the 155,000 cases in the same month last year.
“We know many people are getting sick. Magkaibang virus ‘yun. Wala tayong outbreak from a single virus, there is no need to declare a lockdown but there is a recommendation to start wearing your mask or staying at home when you are sick. That is our public health recommendation,” Health Secretary Teodoro “Ted” Herbosa said on Friday.
