Three minor eruptions monitored at Taal Volcano —PHIVOLCS

Taal Volcano minor phreatomagmatic eruption at 8:13 a.m. Oct. 26, 2025

Taal Volcano in Batangas had three minor eruptions on Sunday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

The first was a minor phreatic eruption at 2:55 a.m.

This was followed by two minor phreatomagmatic eruptions at 8:13 a.m. and 8:20 a.m.

Phreatomagmatic eruptions are caused by the interaction of magma and water, according to PHIVOLCS. These eruptions normally consist of multiple explosive events and their interval may vary.

Meanwhile, a phreatic eruption is a "steam-driven explosion" that happens when magma heats the ground or surface water, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The three eruptions at the main crater of the volcano on Sunday were caught by the IP and thermal cameras of PHIVOLCS.

"These events generated plumes that rose up to 1200 - 2100 meters above the crater," PHIVOLCS said.

Alert Level 1 remains in effect at Taal Volcano on Sunday, it added.

On Saturday, Taal Volcano also had a minor phreatomagmatic eruption which lasted three minutes, PHIVOLCS said in its bulletin issued Sunday.

Nine volcanic earthquakes including two volcanic tremors were also monitored, and these lasted for 47 to 96 minutes.

Some 436 tonnes of sulfur dioxide were detected to have been emitted by the volcano on Saturday.

Moderate plumes rose up to 600 meters tall on Saturday. These drifted northwest and west-northwest.

PHIVOLCS reiterated that entry into Taal Volcano Island, which is a Permanent Danger Zone or PDZ, should not be allowed.

Likewise, boating on Taal Lake and occupancy thereof should be prohibited, it said.

Flying aircraft close to the volcano should also not be allowed, PHIVOLCS said.

Taal Volcano poses possible hazards such as:

  • steam-driven or phreatic or gas-driven explosions;
  • volcanic earthquakes;
  • minor ashfall; and
  • lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas.
