Kanlaon Volcano spews ash — PHIVOLCS

Ash emission was reported at the summit crater of Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Thursday afternoon.

PHIVOLCS said the emission occurred from 12:37 p.m. to 12:57 p.m. Thursday.

"This event generated grayish plumes that rose up to 300 meters above the crater before drifting to the general west as recorded by the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory - Canlaon City (KVO-CC) IP Camera," PHIVOLCS said.

Alert Level 2 remains in effect over Kanlaon Volcano, indicating increased unrest.

In its monitoring bulletin released Thursday morning, the PHIVOLCS said four volcanic earthquakes were recorded at Kanlaon Volcano from 12 a.m. on Wednesday to 12 a.m. on Thursday.

During this period, a weak emission of plume reaching up to 200 meters was observed from the volcano, drifting west.

A total of 877 tons of sulfur dioxide gases were released from the volcano on Wednesday, according to the PHIVOLCS.

The volcano edifice remained inflated.

Sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may occur at Kanlaon. Under Alert Level 2, entry into the four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and the flying of any aircraft close to the volcano are prohibited. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
