Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy on Monday ordered that churches in the archdiocese be used as shelters amid Typhoon Tino.

“As Archbishop of Cebu, I have directed all priests to open the churches within the archdiocese as shelters for those seeking refuge during the storm,” Uy said in a social media post of the Cebu archdiocese.

“However, this does not include churches that were damaged by the recent earthquake,” he added.

Uy urged the faithful to “keep everyone in your prayers.”

The magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Bogo City on September 30 damaged some Catholic churches in Cebu.

Among these is the centuries-old Archdiocesan Shrine of Santa Rosa de Lima in Daanbantayan.

According to PAGASA’s 5 p.m. weather bulletin, Signal No. 4 is hoisted in 8 areas as Typhoon Tino slightly intensifies while drawing near Eastern Visayas in the Caraga area.

Tino was located 170 km east southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, and is carrying maximum sustained winds of 130 km/h near the center and gusts of up to 160 km/h, and is moving westward at 20 km/h. —NB, GMA Integrated News
