Typhoon Tino flash floods: at least 40 houses swept away in Compostela, Cebu
An estimated 40 houses were swept away by raging floodwaters from a creek in Barangay Tamiao, Compostela, Cebu, as Typhoon Tino ravaged the Visayas regions on Tuesday.
The Compostela municipal disaster risk reduction and management office has so far tallied 17 deaths resulting from the strong winds and floods caused by the typhoon.
According to a report by Decemay Padilla of Super Radyo Cebu on Wednesday, the municipal health office noted that residents failed to evacuate.
They reportedly believed the creek's water level would not rise significantly, based on their experience during past typhoons.
In a separate incident, two families, totaling 10 individuals, temporarily sought shelter under a large steel culvert (pipe) in Calinog, Iloilo.
They reportedly chose this as refuge instead of going to the designated evacuation center in Barangay Tabucan.
As reported by Sevein Hope Gegantoca of Super Radyo Iloilo, the video uploader explained that his family and his sibling's family decided to stay under the steel culvert because it was closer to their residence than the barangay hall.
They admitted that movement was limited inside the pipe, as they had brought their clothes and some cooked food with them.
