Tino floods also leave animals dead in Visayas, Palawan
Animals, mostly livestock, were among the casualties of the floods caused by the torrential rains dumped by Typhoon Tino in the Visayas and Palawan.
According to Tina Panganiban Perez’s report on “24 Oras” on Thursday, floods in Barangay Roberto Salas Benedicto in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental waters rose so high that residents climbed their roofs for their own safety, while felled trees and debris floated in the murky floodwaters.
An animal shelter in Bacolod City was destroyed, leaving many rescued animals, mostly dogs, without food, water, and a place to stay.
A livestock owner tearfully recalled losing more than 70 pigs, as the sudden rush of water made it impossible to rescue all of her livestock.
In Talisay, Negros Occidental, residents were shocked upon seeing a large python slithering through the flood and ignoring a trapped chicken in the middle of the downpour.
In Roxas, Palawan, the Condes family mourned the loss of their cow and 11 goats which drowned after getting swept away by floods, despite the family’s efforts to evacuate them to higher ground.
A carabao in El Nido also died after being struck by a buri tree that was uprooted by strong winds.
Rescue teams in Puerto Princesa City fought powerful currents to reach stranded residents, using ropes and rubber boats to get the typhoon victims to safety.
According to Iloilo’s Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), more than 1,000 houses were damaged in the province.
Leganes, Iloilo suffered the worst damage with over 600 homes partially or totally destroyed.
In Barangay Pasonanca, Zamboanga City, persistent rains caused the soil to soften, leading to the collapse of several houses.
“Yung poste ng bahay namin nag collapse. Apat kami. Yung asawa ko, yung isang five years old, tapos yung 10 months old baby dito sa bahay,” said Mary Grace Hongco, a resident whose home was destroyed when the soil beneath their houses eroded.
