One dead in Catbalogan, Samar due to Uwan
One person died in Catbalogan, Samar as heavy rains from Super Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-Wong) poured early Sunday.
The fatality was a 54-year-old woman in Barangay 3 Poblacion, Catbalogan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office officer Juniel Tagarino said in an interview on Super Radyo dzBB Sunday.
The woman's family was among those living in the coastal area who were being evacuated.
However, the victim went back to her house to get something.
She was on a makeshift wooden bridge going toward her house when the bridge collapsed and she fell into the waters.
The Catbalogan CDRRMO received information about the missing victim at 3 a.m.
A search and rescue team was dispatched in the barangay.
However, the team initially could not reach the area due to the strong waves.
The team went back when the situation was more manageable, and they were able to retrieve the body of the victim.
Six barangays were flooded Sunday, Tagarino said. Some had waist-deep flood, while others had floodwaters reaching the knee. These areas were in high-risk low-lying areas and in coastal barangays.
As of 12 noon Sunday, 1,066 families or 3,912 individuals were staying in evacuation centers.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 is in effect in Catbalogan, Samar as of PAGASA's 2 p.m. bulletin. —KG, GMA Integrated News
