Marcos visits typhoon-hit Albay
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Tuesday visited typhoon-hit areas in Albay to assure residents of continued government assistance following the onslaught of Super Typhoon Uwan.
Marcos inspected the Cararayan-Naga Elementary School (CNES), where he spoke with students attending morning classes under a shifting scheme.
Seven of the school’s classrooms sustained major damage estimated at P3.5 million, while eight others suffered minor damage worth P392,000, according to Department of Education (DepEd) Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Bernie Despabiladero.
Three of the school’s water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities were also destroyed, along with 200 learning resources and 50 desks.
“The visit underscores the President’s commitment to prioritizing education, especially in times of crisis,” Despabiladero said, expressing gratitude on behalf of the Albay Schools Division.
The Office of the President provided immediate relief, including school supplies and internet connectivity.
Two Starlink satellite units were donated—one to CNES and another to Tiwi Central School—to restore communication and educational support for affected learners.
Meanwhile, the DepEd distributed learning materials and learner kits, while volunteers from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and local government units conducted clearing operations. Psychological first aid was also given to students.
The President later convened a situation briefing with Cabinet members, as well as national and local officials, to assess the extent of damage and ensure coordinated relief and rehabilitation efforts continue. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
