US gov't disowns Olongapo apartment posing as embassy property
The United States embassy denied Tuesday that the residential apartment in Olongapo City claiming to be a property of the American government is connected to its chancery in Manila.
"We confirm that this is not an official US government property and understand that the sign has been removed," said US embassy spokesman Jameson DeBose.
A US flag was displayed at the apartment building and a sign saying the property is "an American embassy" was posted on the gate.
"Entering without a passport, proper documentation or authorization is considered entering a foreign country illegally and if caught, you will be prosecuted under international law," the sign read.
A media report quoting a woman renting the apartment with her husband said they put up the flag and sign to discourage trespassers. She also claimed her husband was a US diplomat. — Michaela Del Callar/ VDV, GMA Integrated News
