Senior citizen swept away by flood in Negros Oriental

A senior citizen was swept away by the flood caused by rain dumped by Tropical Storm Verbena in Negros Oriental.

According to a report on State of the Nation by Aileen Pedreso of GMA Regional TV, the daughter of the 61-year-old man could only utter a loud cry after seeing the incident in Barangay Pacuan, La Libertad town.

The report said the victim gathered wood to be used for cooking and crossed the spillway that overflowed because of the heavy rain.

In Barangay Buenavista, Guinhulngan, residents helped a rider after his motorcycle fell while navigating the flooded spillway.

Residents also endured the flood in Canlaon City, while in Barangay 40, a family witnessed their entire house destroyed by raging waters, leaving them without anything but the wet clothes they were wearing. 

According to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, 26 barangays were hit by the floods, with 2,000 families affected.—LDF, GMA Integrated News
