2 soldiers killed in San Jose De Buan, Samar clash

Two enlisted personnel were killed and one civilian was wounded in an encounter with suspected New People’s Army (NPA) members in Barangay Babaclayon, San Jose De Buan, Samar on Wednesday, according to the Philippine Army.

In a statement Wednesday evening, Philippine Army chief Lieutenant General Antonio Nafarrete said the military mourned the loss of the fallen soldiers.

“Our fallen soldiers served with courage and dedication, and their sacrifice will not be forgotten. Security operations will continue to ensure the protection of local communities,” Nafarrete said.

Nafarrete also extended condolences to the bereaved families as he vowed to provide them assistance.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and assure them of the Army’s full support during this difficult time,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nafarrete encouraged NPA members to pursue peaceful reintegration as the Philippine Army will continue to capture the remaining members of the rebel group.

“We call on the remaining CPP-NPA members to abandon armed struggle and pursue peaceful reintegration,” he said.

“We will have no let up as troops continue to track down and pursue CTG remnants. The Philippine Army remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding our people and working toward lasting peace,” he added.

In a separate statement on Thursday, the 8th Infantry Division (*ID) said the encounter occurred as government forces responded to reports from residents that the rebels allegedly “forcibly occupied private properties and used these as hideouts.”

The 8ID said that these are violations of the International Humanitarian Law (IHL).

“They were met with deliberate and hostile fire from heavily armed CNTs, prompting soldiers to engage in a legitimate defensive firefight,” the 8ID said.

“While maneuvering to shield civilians caught in the danger area, troops were treacherously targeted by the CNTs,” it added.

Pursuit operations are ongoing to ensure that the remaining members of the rebel group are held accountable for their actions, according to the 8ID. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
