Nartatez orders probe into slay of journo-councilor in Surigao del Sur

The head of the Philippine National Police directed a thorough investigation into the murder of Gerry Campos, who was a broadcaster-turned-municipal councilor in the province of Surigao del Sur.

In a press release on Monday, PNP acting chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said that there is a need to establish the motive of the crime even though the 42-year-old attacker was nabbed by the police.

''The Philippine National Police condemns this attack. We assure the family and friends of Gerry Campos that we will look into this case to determine the motive and hold accountable those behind this senseless killing,” Nartatez said.

Campos was fatally stabbed on Saturday, December 6, while walking near a gasoline station in Barangay Sta. Cruz.

Police were able to apprehend the suspect later that day during a pursuit operation.

Campos served as a director of Radio Mindanao Network in Butuan City and was manager of Radyo Serbato in Butuan City before he won a seat in Marihatag municipal council.

Nartatez urged the public to immediately report to authorities if they have information that could be relevant in the resolution of the case.

He also reaffirmed the PNP’s commitment to safeguarding both residents and members of the press, emphasizing that violence or any culture of impunity against journalists will not be tolerated.

This is in line with the directive of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., through the guidance of DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla, to ensure swift and thorough investigations in cases involving public servants, journalists, and civilians, with the aim to uphold the rule of law while protecting the rights and safety of all citizens. —Anna Felicia Bajo/RF, GMA Integrated News
