Review of tree cutting for Olongapo solar project needed, DENR says

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said an investigation should be conducted to determine whether trees were cut and land was flattened on the mountain where the solar power project was constructed in Barangay Sta. Rita, Olongapo City.

According to a “24 Oras” report on Wednesday, DENR said improper land leveling can expose the soil and cause water runoff.

The agency also acknowledged the concerns of residents that tree cutting could lead to flooding and landslides.

The DENR also said these projects have thresholds based on the amount of electricity they generate.

If the capacity exceeds the limit, an environmental impact study is required under DENR regulations.

The agency also urged affected residents to engage in public hearings and consultations to voice their concerns and have them addressed. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/BAP, GMA Integrated News
