NGCP hoists yellow alert over Visayas grid
The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) is placing the Visayas power grid under yellow alert on Thursday afternoon due to thin supply amid a demand surge.
In an advisory, NGCP said the yellow alert would be in place from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on December 11, 2025.
A yellow alert indicates that the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
It does not necessarily lead to power interruptions.
The Visayas grid’s available capacity stood at 2,578 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 2,535 MW.
The grid operator cited the following factors that triggered the raising of the yellow alert:
- Visayas demand increased by 36MW today
- KSPC Unit 2 (103MW) still out
- Mindanao demand increased by 49MW, limiting Mindanao-Visayas Interconnectipn export to Visayas to 207MW
- Agus 6 derated today at 66.5MW from 101MW yesterday
Moreover, NGCP said that “10 plants have been on forced outage between April to December, three since 2024, two since 2023, and one other power plant out since 2021; while 16 are running on derated capacities, for a total of 482.41MW unavailable to the grid.”
“The Luzon and Mindanao grids are under normal condition,” the grid operator said. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
