Magnitude 5.8 quake hits coast off Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur
A magnitude 5.8 earthquake was recorded off the coast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur early Monday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.
In an advisory, PHIVOLCS said the tremor struck at 1:53 a.m. Monday at 135 km N 84° east of Hinatuan, Surigao Del Sur with a depth focus of 20 kilometers.
The earthquake was initially logged as a magnitude 5.7 tremor but was upgraded to magnitude 5.8 a few hours later.
The earthquake was tectonic in origin. PHIVOLCS said it is expecting aftershocks from the quake, with no damages expected so far.
Intensity III was felt in Hinatuan and Bislig City, Surigao del Sur while Intensity II was recorded in Bislig City as well. Intensity I was recorded in Cabadbaran, Agusan del Sur. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
