PCG deploys vessels to ferry stranded passengers at Lucena Port amid holiday rush

The Philippine Coast Guard on Wednesday deployed two multi-role response vessels to ferry stranded passengers at the Port of Lucena, Quezon amid the Christmas rush.

The PCG said it utilized BRP Suluan (MRRV-4406) to transport 75 passengers who were unable to secure commercial trips from Lucena to San Agustin, Romblon.

The vessel departed at around 6 a.m.

A second ship, BRP Bagacay (MRRV-4410), remained on standby at the port to accommodate others who may also be stranded.

Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog Commander Commodore Geronimo Tuvilla said the ferry operation was conducted in strict compliance with maritime safety and security protocols.

“This initiative underscores the PCG’s dual role as a maritime safety agency and a humanitarian force, reaffirming our commitment to compassion, unity, and service, especially during critical times, while making the Christmas season meaningful for families across island communities,” Tuvilla said.

Oplan Biyaheng Ayos: Pasko 2025

As part of Oplan Biyaheng Ayos: Pasko 2025, the Coast Guard reported monitoring 266,554 outbound passengers and 233,670 inbound passengers across ports nationwide on December 23 alone.

Across its 16 districts, the PCG has inspected 2,229 vessels and 2,000 motorbancas to ensure compliance with safety standards. All Coast Guard districts, stations, and sub-stations have been placed on heightened alert from December 20, 2025 to January 4, 2026 to manage the surge of holiday travelers.

The seafaring public is advised to coordinate with the PCG through its official Facebook page or the Coast Guard Public Affairs Service hotline (0927-560-7729) for inquiries and clarifications on sea travel protocols during the Christmas season. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
