Death toll in bus accident in Camarines Sur rises to 6
The number of fatalities in the bus accident in Del Gallego, Camarines Sur a day after Christmas rose to six on Sunday, police said.
"'Yung initial na apat na namatay o nasawi doon sa aksidente noong Disyembre 26 ay nadagdagan ng dalawa," Police Captain Bernie Undecimo, chief of police of Del Gallego Municipal Police Station, said.
(To the initial report of four dead in the accident last December 26, two were added.)
One victim died on Saturday, while the other one passed away early Sunday morning at Bicol Medical Center, he said.
Four people were initially reported to have died after a passenger bus fell into a ravine along Andaya Highway in Del Gallego early morning on Friday.
Police said the bus crashed at around 2 a.m. in Barangay Magais 1. The bus came from Quezon City and was on its way to Sorsogon. It carried 25 passengers and two drivers.
The bus fell into a ravine about 26 to 30 meters deep. Trees below the ravine helped stop the bus from falling further, which prevented more damage.
According to the Del Gallego Police, it is possible that the driver fell asleep while behind the wheel and lost control of the vehicle.
Meanwhile, the bus driver is still being treated at a hospital as of posting time.
Charges have been filed against the bus driver who is being watched by police.
The bus company continues to assist the affected passengers. —with a report from Peewee Bacuño/KG, GMA Integrated News
