Magnitude-5.1 earthquake recorded off Davao Occidental — PHIVOLCS

State volcanologists logged a magnitude-5.1 earthquake off the coast of Davao Occidental on Thursday, New Year's Day 2026.

According to a report by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquake was recorded 231 kms off Jose Abad Santos town in Davao Occidental.

The earthquake occurred at about 10:56 a.m. and was tectonic in origin. It had a depth of 134 kms.

No damage was expected following the quake, but PHIVOLCS warned that aftershocks may occur. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
