LTO summons pick-up truck driver who brandished gun in viral road rage incident

The Land Transportation Office on Thursday issued a show cause order (SCO) against the driver of a white pick-up truck who allegedly brandished his gun at other motorists in Cagayan de Oro City in late December last year.

The agency also imposed a 90-day preventive suspension of the driver’s license of the motorist, who was captured on video as he made an obscene hand gesture while holding his gun in the other hand.

In a statement, the LTO said the alleged road rage incident happened on December 29, 2025 at the corner of 8th Street and Hayes Street in Cagayan de Oro City.

A viral video of the incident showed the pick-up truck driver pulling out his gun and making an obscene hand gesture at other motorists.

The LTO said such actions, if proven true, are in violation of provisions of the Republic Act 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code on being an “improper person to operate a motor vehicle.”

LTO chief and Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao tasked the LTO Regional Office 10 (LTO RO-10) to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident.

The registered owner and the driver of the pick-up truck were ordered to present themselves before the LTO RO-10 office in Cagayan de Oro City on Monday, January 5, 2026.

“Kinakailangan din nilang magsumite ng sinumpaan o beripikadong paliwanag kung bakit hindi sila dapat patawan ng kaukulang parusang administratibo kaugnay ng insidente,” the LTO said.

(They should also submit a sworn or verified explanation why they should not face administrative sanctions in relation to the incident.)

The pick-up truck, an Isuzu D-MAX, was placed under an LTO alarm to prevent any transactions involving the vehicle.

In addition, the driver’s license of the motorist who drove the pick-up truck will be preventively suspended for 90 days.

Lacanilao said failure to heed the LTO’s summons and submit an explaiantion will mean that the case will be immediately resolved based on the evidence and records on hand. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
