1 dead, 1 missing after kayak capsizes off Surigao del Norte

A person died while another remains missing after their kayak capsized in the waters off Pasikon Beach in Barangay Baybay, Burgos in Surigao del Norte earlier this week.

In a statement on Thursday, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said it conducted a search and rescue (SAR) operation after the small boat was overturned on December 30, Tuesday, at 12:15 p.m.

Three individuals were on board the kayak when it encountered strong waves, causing it to capsize.

The PCG rescued one injured survivor and recovered the remains of one of the kayak’s passengers. Their companion, a 19-year-old resident of the City of Malolos, Bulacan, remains missing.

The PCG advised all vessels and watercraft in the vicinity to “maintain heightened vigilance and be on the lookout and immediately report to the nearest Coast Guard Unit for an appropriate response.” — JMA, GMA Integrated News
