Mayon Volcano logs volcanic earthquake, 43 rockfall events

A volcanic earthquake and 43 rockfall events were recorded as Mayon Volcano continues to be on Alert Level 2, or increased unrest, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Saturday.

In a bulletin issued at 5 a.m., PHIVOLCS said Mount Mayon’s crater glow was obscured, and it emitted 288 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux.

It also recorded a moderate emission of a plume 200 meters tall, drifting north-northeast.

The volcano’s edifice is inflated, PHIVOLCS said.

PHIVOLCS advised the public against entering the six-kilometer-radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and entering the Extended Danger Zone (EDZ).

Flying any aircraft close to the volcano is also prohibited.

The agency also warned of possible hazards that may occur, such as sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, rockfalls or landslides/avalanches, or lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall.

PHIVOLCS raised the alert status of Mayon Volcano to Alert Level 2 at the start of the year due to increased activity.

Following this, Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) in the vicinity of Mayon Volcano was extended by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) until Sunday.

According to a Super Radyo DZBB report by Rod Vega, the NOTAM will be effective until 9:23 a.m. of January 4.

CAAP operates seven airports in the Bicol Region, namely Ambulan Airport, Sorsogon Airport, Daet Airport, Masbate Airport, Naga Airport, Virac Airport, and the Bicol International Airport.—VAL, GMA Integrated News
