5 nabbed for illegal fishing in Surigao City
Five people were arrested for alleged illegal fishing off Barangay Danawan, Surigao City around midday on Sunday, January 4, 2026.
The Philippine National Police (PNP)-Maritime Group identified the suspect as alias “Bern,” 44; “Del,” 30; “Ed,” 27; “Nil,” 40; and “Jun,” 37.
Seized during the operation were a motorized fishing boat, two engines, an air compressor with hose, various diving equipment, a spear gun, and around six kilos of assorted fish worth around P123,000.
The suspects and the seized evidence were brought to the Surigao del Norte Maritime Police Station.
The suspects will face charges for violation of The Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998 (RA 10654).
The PNP-Maritime Group reminded the public to refrain from using prohibited fishing methods in order to protect marine resources and ensure the long-term livelihood fisherfolk.
“Patuloy ang paalala ng Maritime Group sa publiko na iwasan ang paggamit ng mga ipinagbabawal na paraan ng pangingisda upang mapangalagaan ang yamang-dagat at masiguro ang pangmatagalang kabuhayan ng mga mangingisda,” the PNP-Maritime Group said. —GMA Regional TV
