2 killed as truck topples onto houses in Laguna

Two people were killed after a dump truck loaded with gravel plowed into several houses and fell on its side along Famy–Infanta Provincial Road in Siniloan, Laguna.

According to Saleema Refran’s Tuesday report on “24 Oras,” residents mauled the truck driver and his helper moments after the vehicle struck the houses and trapped several people.

The passenger attempted to flee but was reportedly cornered by residents.

Rescuers had to use a payloader to extricate the trapped victims, who were then rushed to a hospital for medical treatment.

Two people, including a minor, died while receiving treatment, while six others were injured, among them the truck driver and his passenger.

The truck was traveling from Infanta, Quezon to Lucena City when it crashed at a curved portion of the road.

Some witnesses said the truck was swerving while traveling at high speed.

Meanwhile, the truck driver told police that the vehicle’s brakes failed, prompting him to veer toward the side of the road.

The truck helper said he was mauled and strangled as soon as he got out of the truck.

The truck driver will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in double homicide, multiple physical injuries, and damage to property, according to Siniloan police.—Mariel Celine Serquiña/MCG, GMA Integrated News
