LOOK: Another ‘uson’ descends Mayon Volcano

Uson descends Mayon Volcano, Jan. 12, 2026

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has recorded another pyroclastic density current (PDC) or “uson” as it went down the slopes of the Mayon Volcano before dawn Monday.

In posts on its social media accounts, PHIVOLCS shared the video of the PDC descending the Basud Gully at 1:19 a.m. of Monday, January 12.

The descent of the “uson” was captured by a thermal camera at the Upper Lidong Observation Station VMUL.

On Sunday afternoon, state seismologists recorded an increased seismic energy release in Mayon Volcano due to PDCs in six out of 16 stations of the Mayon Volcano Network.

Mayon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3.

“This increase was induced by background tremor while no other volcanic earthquakes have been detected, which may be due to prevailing fully open vent conditions as the volcano effusively erupts,” PHIVOLCS said.

It added that there was no increase in swelling or ground deformation in the volcano.

Earlier in the day, PHIVOLCS said Mayon Volcano had 256 rockfall events and 41 PDCs or “uson” in the past 24 hours. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
