Deaths in Cebu City landfill landslide climb to 10

Ten people have died so far while 26 are still missing, four days after a mountain of garbage collapsed at a landfill site in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City last week.

This was according to a “Saksi” report on Monday.

One of the casualties, 25-year-old James Carl Andrino, dreamed of working abroad and was already processing his documents.

Andrino was the supervisor of the private landfill facility.

Another victim, Rowena Ranido, was still alive when rescuers found her, but they were unable to get her out immediately.

Earlier, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Central Visayas issued a cease-and-desist order against Prime Integrated Waste Solutions, Inc. (PWS), the operator of the collapsed landfill site.

This was after a site inspection conducted by the DENR – Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) in Region VII on Friday.

The DENR said it is working with the landfill operator in reviewing their oversight measures and ensuring that they fully comply with environmental laws. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/JMA, GMA Integrated News
