Cebu City in state of calamity after landfill landslide; death toll at 12

The Cebu City Council approved on Tuesday a resolution declaring a state of calamity in the city following a landslide at a landfill in Barangay Binaliw that has so far killed 12 people.

According to Super Radyo Cebu’s John Kim Bote, the resolution was filed by Councilor Dave Tumulak, who also heads the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Tumulak said the disaster has disrupted garbage collection in the city.

Following the declaration, the city government will allocate P30 million to address waste management issues and support search and rescue operations at the landfill.

At around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, operatives recovered the remains of a female victim, bringing the death toll to 12.

Rescuers are still searching for 24 other individuals, the report added.—Vince Angelo Ferreras/MCG, GMA Integrated News
