WATCH: Waste buries landfill facility in Cebu City
Authorities on Wednesday recovered seven more bodies following a deadly landslide at a landfill in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City, bringing the death toll to 20.
In Mariz Umali’s report on 24 Oras, CCTV footage showed garbage rapidly engulfing the Materials Recovery Facility on January 8 before the feed went black.
Within moments, a massive pile of waste buried the facility, where garbage is processed at the landfill.
Aerial footage showed a collapsed section of the garbage mound.
The impact caused the waste to engulf the facility at the foot of the mound, trapping workers underneath.
Round-the-clock search and rescue operations are continuing, but the Bureau of Fire Protection said life-detecting equipment has so far failed to determine whether detected signals are from humans or animals.
Initial findings indicate that the collapse of the mound of trash was triggered by the cumulative effects of earthquakes and aftershocks in September 2025, further loosened by heavy rains brought by Tropical Cyclone Tino in November.—Mariel Celine Serquiña/MCG, GMA Integrated News
