Death toll in Binaliw, Cebu landfill landslide rises to 22
The number of fatalities in the deadly landslide at a landfill in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City has climbed to 22, authorities said, as search and rescue operations continued on Thursday.
According to a report of Decemay Padilla of Super Radyo Cebu, responders said one woman and one man were retrieved during the operations. Fourteen people remain missing.
Search and rescue teams are continuing operations at the site despite difficult conditions, focusing on areas believed to be where victims may still be trapped.
Earlier, the operator of the sanitary landfill said it would comply with a cease and desist order issued by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
DENR Central Visayas said the order halts landfill operations except for rescue, retrieval, and cleanup activities, to ensure the safety of responders and prevent further incidents.—Sherilyn Untalan/AOL, GMA Integrated News
