PNP sends off over 2,000 cops for 2026 ASEAN meet in Central Visayas

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has formally sent off more than 2,000 security personnel to lead the security operations for the ASEAN Summit

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has formally sent more than 2,000 security personnel to lead the security operations for the ASEAN Summit 2026 in Central Visayas.

In a statement on Friday, the PNP said the send-off ceremony was held at the Panglao Town Plaza in Panglao, Bohol on Wednesday, showcasing the readiness of police forces in the region.

“Ang paghahanda natin para sa ASEAN Summit ay hindi lang tungkol sa dami ng pulis sa lansangan. It’s about being prepared, alert, and synchronized with all our partners,” PNP acting chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said.

(Our preparations for the ASEAN Summit are not just about the number of police on the streets. It’s about being prepared, alert, and synchronized with all our partners.)

“Gusto nating ipakita na ang Pilipinas ay handa—propesyonal, maaasahan, at kayang magbigay ng ligtas na kapaligiran para sa ating mga bisita,” he added.

(We want to show that the Philippines is ready—professional, reliable, and able to provide a safe environment for our guests.)

Local and regional units are prepared to secure Bohol ahead of the arrival of ASEAN leaders, delegates, and foreign visitors, according to the PNP.

Acting Chief of the PNP, Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., said security preparations for the summit go beyond the visible presence of police personnel.

As a support, the Police Regional Office 7 launched the Bohol Tourist Police Unit’s R.I.D.E. Patrol on January 12, which is composed of 88 specially trained tourist police officers.

Central Visayas cops have intensified patrols in tourism hubs and coastal areas, supported by specialized units trained in crowd control, maritime security, rapid response, and emergency management.

Land and water mobility assets are also being maximized, particularly in high-traffic and hard-to-reach areas, according to the PNP.

Security preparations will continue to be refined in the months leading up to the ASEAN Summit, with regular assessments, drills, and community engagement activities to address emerging challenges. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
