Marcos leads unveiling of Negros water treatment plant

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. led the inauguration of the Sum-Ag Water Treatment Plant in Negros Occidental on Monday.

In his speech, Marcos said the project represents sound infrastructure planning and responsible investment in the country’s future.

“As we all know, water is a precious resource that sustains our health and our lives and enables economic activities. When water systems work, progress flows,” Marcos said.

“The Sum-Ag Water Treatment Plant is a clear example of how the public and private sectors can work together to provide solutions. Considered one of the largest water treatment facilities in the Negros Island Region, the Sum-Ag Water Treatment Plant strengthens Bacolod City’s long-term water security,” he added.

The SWTP gets its raw water from the Sum-ag River in Barangay Abo-Abo, Murcia, Negros Occidental, which serves as the main surface water source for treatment and distribution to Bacolod City and nearby areas.

The SWTP then cleans the water in several stages to make it safe to drink.

Marcos said the facility, which has the capacity to deliver up to 75 million liters of potable water per day, will benefit about 100,000 households, or roughly half a million residents.

During the inauguration, Marcos toured the plant’s water intake area and checked the main parts of the treatment process, including sections where water is cleaned, filtered, and treated with chemicals.

He then proceeded to the multimedia filtration system, where officials from Bacolod Bulk Water, Inc. (BBWI) briefed him on the status of other water supply facilities serving Bacolod City and the municipality of Murcia in Negros Occidental.

Marcos also witnessed a demonstration of the pipeline fusion process.

The President said the P1.5 billion investment reflects the country’s strong confidence in the infrastructure sector.

“It demonstrates our country’s established position to make long-term investments succeed, particularly those aligned with climate resilience and sustainable development,” he said.—MCG, GMA Integrated News
