Mayon Volcano's effusive eruption continues for 18th consecutive day

Mayon Volcano in Albay continued its effusive eruption for the 18th consecutive day on Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Sunday.

The volcano generated incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) or “uson” and rockfalls on Saturday which went down the Mi-Isi Gully in the south, Bonga Gully in the southeast, and Basud Gully in the east, it said.

The lava flowed from the summit crater and reached 1.3 to 3.2 kilometers down the three gullies mentioned, PHIVOLCS added.

The volcano also logged one volcanic earthquake, one ongoing tremor, 253 rockfall events, and 44 PDCs on Saturday.

A crater glow has been visible to the naked eye.

A total of 2,327 tonnes of sulfur dioxide were emitted by the volcano.

Moderate plumes rose up to 600 meters above the crater before drifting in the southwest and northeast direction.

"Alert Level 3 prevails over Mayon, and entry into the 6-km Permanent Danger Zone must be prohibited," PHIVOLCS said.

Likewise, entry without vigilance into the Extended Danger Zone should not be allowed, it added.

Flying aircraft near the volcano is hazardous, PHIVOLCS warned.

The agency said Mayon Volcano poses hazards such as:

  • rockfalls or landslides or avalanches;
  • ballistic fragments;
  • lava flows and lava fountaining;
  • PDCs;
  • moderate-sized explosions; and
  • lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall
