Pampanga dike collapse prompts DPWH design overhaul
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Monday announced an overhaul of the Candating flood control project in Pampanga after the dike collapsed due to faulty structural foundations.
The DPWH said it has already begun an immediate technical assessment of the dike, which has repeatedly sustained damage and has affected nearby homes.
“Engineering teams are already on-site to implement urgent measures to protect affected houses and residents. The design will be overhauled to ensure a structurally sound and permanent flood control system,” the department said.
DPWH officials added that they are identifying all liable parties, including the contractor and DPWH personnel, with findings to be submitted to the Office of the Ombudsman and the Department of Justice for possible prosecution.
Last year, “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho” reported that sheet piles used in flood control projects in the area were tilting due to sustained rains, and were being welded back as a temporary remedy.
KMJS reported that the project was undertaken by Eddmari Construction and Trading.
Philippine lawmakers are now investigating alleged irregularities in public works spending after President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. disclosed in August that 20% of the total P545-billion budget for flood control projects went to only 15 contractors, a figure he described as a “disturbing assessment.”—MCG, GMA Integrated News
