LIST: PH’s worst sea mishaps in the past decades


Authorities on Monday continued their search and rescue operations for survivors of the ferry vessel M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 that sank in the waters off Pilas Island in Basilan.

According to Jonathan Andal’s Monday report on “Saksi,” 10 people, including the vessel’s captain, a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel, and a soldier, are still missing.

The death toll has reached 18 so far.

According to data from GMA Integrated News Research, some of the sea tragedies that occurred in the past are:

December 20, 1987 – M/V Doña Paz

The M/V Doña Paz caught fire after it collided with an oil tanker near Tablas Strait between Marinduque and Mindoro, resulting in over 1,800 fatalities as per official reports.

Unofficial estimates, however, pegged the fatalities at around 4,000. Only 26 survived the sinking.

October 24, 1988 – M/V Doña Marilyn

Over 250 people died after the M/V Doña Marilyn sank in the waters between Cebu and Masbate.

September 18, 1998 – M/V Princess of the Orient

The M/V Princess of the Orient sank near Fortune Island in Batangas, leaving 70 dead and 80 missing.

June 21, 2008 – M/V Princess of the Stars

The M/V Princess of the Stars sank near Sibuyan Island in Romblon, with 473 dead and 605 missing. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/JMA, GMA Integrated News
