Win Gatchalian seeks probe into Cebu landfill landslide

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has filed a resolution seeking an investigation into the tragic landslide at a landfill in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu, which killed more than 30 people.

Senate Resolution 277 aims to examine the possible factors that led to the deadly collapse and assess whether the landfill operator complied with environmental, engineering, and safety standards.

“Kung hindi natin maitutuwid ang mga panuntunan, malaki ang posibilidad na may ganito pang trahedya sa iba pang landfill na maglalagay sa panganib sa mga komunidad at mismong mga manggagawa,” Gatchalian said in a statement.

(If we do not correct these rules, there is a high possibility that similar tragedies could happen at other landfills, putting communities and workers at risk.)

The proposed inquiry also seeks to develop legislative and policy measures to strengthen landfill safety standards.

Earlier, Senator Imee Marcos filed a resolution calling for an investigation into the compliance of sanitary landfills with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
