8 hurt as van crashes into street party in Minglanilla, Cebu

Eight people sustained injuries after being run over by a multicab van during a fiesta in the town of Minglanilla in Cebu.

According to Luan-anne Mae Rondina’s Monday report on "24 Oras," the van allegedly suffered brake failure while going downhill and plowed into the victims who were dancing in the middle of the road. The van also hit two motorcycles.

Police investigation said the van’s driver was the barangay captain of Poblasyon Ward 2, who was going home after attending the fiesta and admitted to have drunk alcohol.

The victims were brought to the hospital for medical treatment and are now in good condition.

The barangay captain is in police custody.

He refused to face the camera upon the advice of his lawyer, but in an off-camera interview, he said he will shoulder the medical expenses of the victims and the damages of the motorcycles.

The barangay captain will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple physical injuries and damage to property.

He admitted that he drank alcohol during the fiesta, but authorities were unable to conclude whether he was drunk during the incident.

Authorities reminded motorists anew to avoid driving while under the influence of alcohol. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News
