LOOK: Mayon Volcano’s effusive eruption on Day 28

The Mayon Volcano sustained its effusive eruption for the 28th consecutive day on Tuesday, February 3 as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) continued to record incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), and rockfalls from its crater.

In posts on its social media accounts early Tuesday morning, PHIVOLCS noted that lava flows “have reached radial distances from the crater of ~3.7km in the Basud (east), ~1.6km in the Bonga (southeast), and ~1.3km in the Mi-isi Gullies.”

The posts included a time-lapse video of the glowing lava flows and PDCs or “uson” descending the volcano, taken from 12:30 a.m. to 12:36 a.m.

“Alert Level 3 prevails over Mayon and entry into the 6-km Permanent Danger Zone must be prohibited,” PHIVOLCS added.

In an earlier post on Monday, state volcanologists said Mayon Volcano continued to show signs of unrest, with five volcanic earthquakes, 317 rockfall events, and 30 PDCs logged.

Crater glow and ground deformation were also observed, PHIVOLCS said.

Mayon Volcano’s unrest has disrupted the lives of Albay residents, forcing some to seek shelter in evacuation centers and Tabaco City even declaring a state of calamity. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
