Steel bridge collapses, cars swept away as Basyang lashes Northern Mindanao
Several structures failed to withstand the strong floodwaters in several different areas of Northern Mindanao due to the effects of Tropical Depression Basyang.
According to a "24 Oras" report by Saleema Refran on Friday, a year-old steel bridge in Puga-an, Iligan City was caught on video as it collapsed.
The owner of the video shared that they evacuated shortly after the collapse as floodwater levels continued to rise.
Strong flood currents reaching up to the waist level also swept away vehicles along the road in Barangay Mahayahay.
A structure in First Riverside, Pala-o was also seen gradually caving in due to the current of floodwater from the river. Other structures along the river also collapsed.
Authorities were able to respond to the incidents right away.
Tons of garbage were swept along by the flood on another bridge in Iligan City.
Tubod Bridge was impassable on early Friday morning due to floodwater, while rescue operations were conducted in Barangay Tipanoy for stranded residents.
Rescue teams have also been prepared for other barangays in Iligan City.
The local authorities in Iligan City reported that in 23 evacuation camps, over 1,200 families or 4,697 individuals from 21 affected barangays have been displaced as of 8:30 a.m.
Meanwhile, flood submerged houses in Barangay San Antonio, Tandag City in Surigao del Sur, forcing residents to evacuate towards Barangay Health Stations and the covered court.
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines also announced the temporary closure of Runway 07/25 of the Camiguin Airport after a nearby creek overflowed and submerged it, causing the cancellation of two flights. The flood eventually subsided. —Jiselle Anne C. Casucian/LDF, GMA Integrated News
