5 nabbed as illegal mining site busted in Barobo, Surigao del Sur
Five suspects were recently arrested and various heavy equipment and mining-related materials were seized at an illegal mining site in Barobo, Surigao del Sur, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.
The operation was carried out on February 4 in Barangay Guinhalinan by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region XIII Enforcement Division with tactical support from 24 personnel of the PNP Special Action Force (SAF).
Authorities arrested five suspects, including two foreigners, at the illegal mining site.
The DENR and the PNP also recovered one pick-up truck, three heavy excavators, and various equipment and supplies believed to have been used in illegal mining activities.
Among the seized items were hydraulic oil, grease, coolant, welding equipment, electronic batteries, electrical wires, fuel containers, fuel pump, grinders, shovels, water pump, battery charger, excavator bucket teeth, a Starlink set, assorted tools, and a piece of processed mineral.
The arrested suspects and confiscated items are in the custody of the Barobo Municipal Police Station for documentation and proper disposition.
PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stressed that illegal mining is a serious offense that harms both the environment and the community.
“Illegal mining is not a minor violation. It destroys our forests, contaminates our waterways, and threatens the safety and livelihood of entire communities,” Nartatez said in a statement on Sunday.
He also urged the public to immediately report any suspicious activity and violation of environmental laws, especially in remote locations where illegal operations may be concealed.
Nartatez said such reports may be reported through the Unified 911 hotline.
“This operation sends a strong message that we will not tolerate environmental crimes. Walang puwang sa batas ang mga sumisira sa ating kalikasan (There is no space for those who destroy nature). The PNP will continue to work hand in hand with DENR and other agencies to stop illegal mining operations wherever they exist,” he added. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
