Two dead after van hits motorcycle in Tayabas, Quezon

Two passengers of a motorcycle died while the rider was hurt after their motorcycle was hit by a speeding van in Tayabas City, Quezon.

According to a “Saksi” report on Monday night, the motorcycle was crossing an intersection when a speeding commuter van hit the trio.

The impact threw the victims off the motorcycle. The two back riders died immediately from their injuries while the motorcycle rider is still being treated at a hospital.

Instead of stopping, the van sped off but personnel of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) who saw the accident chased after the commuter van.

The report said the van driver will be facing several charges.

In a statement, the LTO regional office in Calabarzon said it has issued a show cause order (SCO) against the driver and the registered owner of the commuter van.

They were ordered to submit a verified comment or explanation on why they should not be held liable for administrative cases arising from the hit-and-run incident.

They are facing cases of reckless driving and possible colorum operations.

The LTO also issued a 90-day preventive suspension on the driver’s license of the van driver while the van was placed under an LTO alarm status to prevent it from being sold or transferred to another person’s name pending the resolution of the case.

“Hindi kami magdadalawang-isip na gamitin ang buong kapangyarihan ng batas laban sa sinumang motorista na maglalagay sa panganib ng buhay ng iba. Ang pagtakas sa lugar ng aksidente ay isang malinaw na pagpapakita ng kawalan ng pananagutan,” LTO Calabarzon regional director Elmer Decena said.

(We won’t think twice in using the full force of the law against any motorist who endangers the lives of others. Fleeing the scene of an accident is a clear sign that they do not want accountability.)

“Sisiguraduhin ng LTO na mapapanagot ang driver at ang may-ari ng sasakyan alinsunod sa umiiral na mga batas at patakaran,” Decena added.

(The LTO shall see to it that the driver and the owner of the vehicle will be held accountable, in accordance with existing laws and regulations.) — JMA, GMA Integrated News
