Magnitude 5.8 earthquake strikes off Davao Occidental
A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck offshore near Davao Occidental early Sunday, authorities said, continuing a pattern of notable seismic activity in the southern Philippines.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the tremor occurred at 1:22 a.m. on Feb. 15, 2026, with its epicenter about 231 kilometers south?southeast of Jose Abad Santos town.
The quake was tectonic in origin and had a shallow focus of 10 kilometers beneath the seabed, according to Phivolcs.
The agency said no damage is expected from this earthquake, but aftershocks are likely, and residents in nearby areas should remain alert and follow safety protocols.
The Feb. 15 tremor adds to a recent history of moderate to strong quakes in and around Davao Occidental and Davao Oriental, regions that lie along active tectonic zones of the Philippine archipelago.—MCG, GMA Integrated News
